No, not directly. Foreigners can't hold freehold (Hak Milik) title in Indonesia. But there are legal ways in, mainly long-term leasehold (Hak Sewa) or use rights (Hak Pakai) through a licensed notary. We'll walk you through which one fits your situation.
What's the difference between leasehold and freehold in Bali?
Freehold (Hak Milik) is full ownership. It's reserved for Indonesian citizens. Leasehold (Hak Sewa) gives you the right to use a property for a set number of years, usually 25 to 30, often renewable. Most foreign buyers go the leasehold route.
How long does buying a property in Bali typically take?
Usually 4 to 8 weeks once you've agreed on a property and price. That covers due diligence, drafting the contract, and notarization. It can take longer if the property's paperwork isn't fully in order.
Do I need a notary (PPAT) to buy property in Bali?
Yes. Indonesian law requires a PPAT, a licensed Land Deed Official, to formalize any property sale or lease. We work with independent notaries we trust, so the paperwork holds up.
